Hanukkah was a busy, energetic, and meaningful time across the Talmud Torah community, with students celebrating the holiday through music, learning, creativity, and shared experiences.
In the weeks leading up to the community Menorah lighting at the Alberta Legislature on December 14, members of the Talmud Torah student choir dedicated their recesses to practicing for the event. Led by Moreh Ben, students performed Hebrew songs with confidence, proudly representing the school in front of community members and dignitaries. Those in attendance included Mayor Andrew Knack, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ric McIver, Edmonton Police Service representatives, Rabbi Ari Drelich, and Stacey Leavitt Wright, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton. Participating in this annual public celebration gave students the opportunity to share their learning and school spirit beyond the school walls. The event was also featured in Alberta Jewish News.
On December 18, Early Learning and Out of School Care families gathered for our annual Hanukkah celebration that brought together students, parents, and staff. Children enjoyed rotating through hands-on activity stations while families connected with one another. Student performances were shared using the school’s new overhead projector, giving families a chance to enjoy their children’s work together. Guests were delighted to partake in traditional Hanukkah foods, including latkes and sufganiyot. As part of their graduation year, Grade 6 students took on leadership roles, helping with event setup and supporting activity stations throughout the evening.
The celebrations continued on December 19 with a school-wide Hanukkah assembly. Students from Kindergarten through Grade 6 filled the gym with music, singing Hebrew songs and performing with enthusiasm. Several classes showcased their growing musical skills by performing with instruments, reflecting the learning taking place in classrooms throughout the year. Early Learning Centre students and families were invited to attend, offering a preview of the assemblies and school traditions that await them in future years. The gym was full of families, applause, and school spirit.
Hanukkah learning was visible everywhere throughout the school. Hallways and classrooms in both the ELC and K–6 were filled with colourful student artwork inspired by the holiday, and students across grades explored the story and traditions of Hanukkah in age-appropriate ways. From creative projects to discussions about history and meaning, the holiday came to life across the school. Festive moments were rounded out with more traditional Hanukkah treats, much to the delight of students, before everyone headed off for winter break.
